Imagine you have to drive from Hamburg/Germany to Madrid in Spain. How would you do this? Just jump in your car and start driving without knowing exactly which way to go? How long would it take you to arrive at your destination if you just start driving, without having a clue how to get there?
Or wouldn’t it be better to plan your trip in detail before you actually drive off?
Many people that are new to the business world are trying to run and grow their business like in the first example. There is the problem, if you don’t know how to arrive at your destination; it’s difficult to get there!
Like in any business, if you don’t have a detailed plan of action in place – a business plan – you run the risk that you never hit your goals.
Why goal setting is important to succeed in business
Many people feel as if they are drifting around in the world. They work hard, they are always busy but they don’t seem to get anywhere. One of the main reasons why they feel this way is that they haven’t spent time thinking about what they really want out of their life. Unfortunately the same is true for a business.
When you don’t know where you are going, it is really hard to get anywhere. Unconsciously many people set themselves up for failure because they have either no goals or very unclear and vague goals. “I want to lose weight” sounds like a great plan but if there is no number and timeframe in place, the people who set this kind of goal will never reach it. Do you want to lose 2 kg or 8 kg? How long will it take to achieve it? Will it take 4 weeks or 4 months?
Goals are what take us forward in life. They are the first steps on every journey. It’s very important that you realize the importance of goal setting and apply this knowledge in life and in business.
5 Reasons Why goal setting is important to succeed in business
1. Take control of your life and business
In today’s fast moving world many people seem like they are wandering through their life. Even though they work hard and they are always busy doing something, they don’t feel like they are getting anywhere. That is because they don’t have a clear direction of where they want to go and what they want to achieve. Most people work for years and years and when they reach their 40s or 50s they are shocked when they realize life is moving on and they haven’t achieved anything.
If you are applying the same principle in your business you will have the same result. When you never had clear goals or stop setting goals and thinking about what you really want, you are floating along in auto-pilot and live a life without any conscious creation. Instead of letting others tell you what you have to do, you proactively should be in charge of your life and business and start thinking about what you want for yourself.
2. Goals tell you what you really want
If you never set clear goals, how can you know and find out what you really want? If you wandering through life, and set up your business the same way, with vague ideas in mind like “success” or “accomplishment”, you might never discover that buying this new shiny car isn’t what will bring you real happiness.
When we are asking ourselves frequently what we really want and also constantly re-assess our goals, we always have a clear vison of where to go. This vision and a clear plan – a step by step guide how to achieve your goals – is the base to figure out what we really want in life and business; and then we can go out and do it.
3. Goals allow to measure progress
By setting clear business goals you are able to measure your progress because you always have an endpoint in mind.
Top-athletes, successful business-people, network marketers and achievers in any field are setting clear goals. Setting goals gives you a long-term vision and short-term motivation. It helps you to organize your time and to get focused so that you can make the most out of your life.
When you set goals, you also have a clear vision where to work toward; then you are pushing yourself to get the best results, rather than waiting for things to happen.
What doesn’t get measured, can’t be improved. If you don’t set specific goals or targets, how and what do you want to improve? Without a clear goal, there is nothing to work toward.
What do you want to achieve 6 months from now? What in one year? When you set business goals, you think ahead, and based on this you can create your plan of action. Even if things don’t go as you have planned them in the first place, there is a base for revision and adjustments to still go toward your vision.
4. Goals motivate you
The roots for all motivation in your life are goals. By setting goals you give yourself a clear endpoint to aim for and get excited about. When setting goals, you have to connect with yourself and your desires and dreams. These help you to motivate and strive for them. Goals motivate you; they energize behavior, give it direction, provide a challenge and force you to think also outside the box.
5. Goals create laser focus
Clear goals give you super focus; focus on what exactly to spend your time and energy on.
At one point of my career I realized that I needed a certain number of personal customers to achieve my goals. Even though I had no idea of how to make it all happen, I made the decision of reaching this goal within 3 months. This decision created a laser focus in me and I wanted to make it successful.
After a brainstorm for ideas, I began to study where to find new people in our area and how to become a good networker to be able to grow my network. Before the 3 months have passed I hit my goal and enjoyed the benefits of it.
Without having a clear goal and a plan in place this could not have been achieved.
Start setting your goals
As we have seen further above there are a number of reasons and benefits to have clear goals in live and for your business. Take some time and set your goals. Apart from having goals in place you will definitely also grow as a person.
